    Jeep 2001 power window dies

My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee passenger window made a funny sound, then suddenly dropped half way down.  When I try to put it up with the electric button, it makes a grinding noise but won't go up.  My dealer said it will cost about $350.00 to repair it as he needs to buy the motor and the other part???  I'm clueless.  He said the motor is good, but he can't buy the other part by itself.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I have no idea about cars.  In advance, thanks for any help!

The part you are talking about is the window regulator. Unfortunately, the motor is not sold separately from the regulator itself. If you can do the work yourself, I would try going to a recycled car parts store such as LKQ where you should be able to get a better price. While I usually suggest dealer parts for most repairs on newer cars, items such as power window regulators from an aftermarket or recycled parts store will work just as good. If you don't know how to repair it yourself, I would call around to any shops that are willing to install parts that you bring in. Some will. Some won't.

Re: Jeep 2001 power window dies

I have a 2002 Jeep Laredo and 8 months ago the very same thing happened to the passenger window and guess what??  Today it happened to the driver window.  When I had the passenger window fixed it did cost around 300.00.  I was told the same thing you were.  I am totally frustrated with this vehicle.  This is not something that should happen without trauma and was told by a mechanic today that this happens a lot with jeeps.  I am comtemplating fixing this myself.  I did some research and found out that I can get the part for around 90.00.  I am a woman and hate fixing things.  What are you going to do?  Any suggestions for me?

Re: Jeep 2001 power window dies

Thank you so very much.  That's what my mechanic said, as far as me having to purchase both of the pieces, despite needing only the one.  He said I'm looking at about $350.00 to have it repaired!  So I think I'll hunt around for a regulator.  Perhaps a junk car yard would have one?  Thanks again so very, very much!

PS:  Where did you find you can get just the regulator?  I'm not paying that much to fix one window.  I've had more problems with my 2001 Jeep than I ever did with my 1996.  I've had to replace the transmission, my last inspection ran over $1,300.; I'm tired of spending money on it!  I'll check out the site mentioned above and my local junk car yards.

Re: Jeep 2001 power window dies ... help needed

Well, every site I checked out says the same thing "This part is currently not available".  Could it be because so many Jeep windows are faulty?  I'm getting very disgusted with this whole thing.  Why should I have to buy the entire unit when the motor is still good?  If anyone has any other sites I could check, I would greatly, greatly appreciate it!  In advance, thanks for any ideas.

UPDATE:  I found a new power window motor and regulator on EBay, item number 160144142140.  The cost is buy it now for $46.95 with $12.95 shipping and handling.  The seller, am-autoparts, has an excellent feedback rating.  Wouldn't I be ok to just buy that and find someone to install it?  About how much would I expect to pay someone to install it?  Anyone that can check this item out and let me know, I would be deeply grateful to!

Re: Jeep 2001 power window dies

I did a lot of research and just now bought a new motor and regulator (you must buy both parts) on EBay for a grand total of $59.90.  The few mechanics I checked with said a friend of mine who is mechanically inclined should be able to install it, but they offered to help if he gets stuck.  I refuse to spend $350.00 to have the "Jeep" brand on the inside of my door.  I have put so much money into this 2001 Jeep.  My 1996 one never gave me a problem.  Being female and not familiar with the automotive world, I can't name all of the major and small parts I've had to replace.  I know I had to get a new transmission, I know my last inspection cost me over $1,200.  I know my rear windshield wiper doesn't work.  I know my front headlights look horrible.  I know I am so disgusted with this Jeep.

I did find directions on installing the window part online (included pictures), so I'm going to have my friend give it a try.  I will admit I do enjoy driving it, as I did my old Jeep, but at this point I have too much money invested, sunk, into it to even trade it or sell it.  Oh, how I wish I had my old one back.  Live and learn.  This thing isn't worth half the price I paid for it!

Good luck with yours and let me know how you make out.  Thanks!

Re: Jeep 2001 power window dies

Would you provide the web site where you found instructions for installing the window part with pictures? My problem is how do I remove the door panel so I can get to the window mechanism.

    Thanks
