    sputtering, coughing 93 escort

1993 escort wagon.  The engine runs good, however under load it will miss or cough.  For example, when taking off from a start, or in high gear when on highway and give slow acceleration.  I am good with working on my own vehicles but not sure where to start.  Plugs and wires?,  could it be a vacuum leak?  or fuel (filter)?  I looked and listened close, can't here leaks .  On hard acceleration it won't do it.  Any advice to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated. 4 speed automatic trans

I don't know enough about that but when my uncle reach a speed of about 50-55 on a highway, the car occasionally/getting to be regularly, when you set the cruise control, it revs the car up to 60-65, high rpms, then backs down, feels very rough. I'm not sure about the coughing situation

I sprayed a little water while it was running on the plug wires and it was a fireworks show.  I changed the wires and no more problem.[:)]
