That stupid "Check Engine light..."

    That stupid "Check Engine light..."

I hope someone can help here and save me another expensive trip to a repair shop I think is overpriced!

Since I bought my 2002 Mustang convertible, I have had problems with the 'Check Engine' light coming on, but now I have a new twist on it.  It was back to the dealer three times.  Sometimes it comes on, sometimes it doesn't, and there seems to be no reason for it.  I have found that a loose gas cap sometimes triggers it, but tightening it doesn't always make it go away.  I finally just got used to the light and as long as the gauges look okay, let it go.

BUT last night, the light, which had already been on, started flashing.  When I stopped the car and turned it back on, it didn't flash again initially, but started again a few minutes later.  I drove it home with the light flashing.  This morning, the light was on but not flashing when I left for work, but on the way it started flashing again.

Does anyone have any idea what the flashing means?  Does a 'Check Engine' light ever actually flash or just come on to signal emergency?  I guess I am asking if this means something new or just another quirk of an already unpredictable light.

Since the first of the year, I have bought a new battery, had the oil and transmission fluid and hoses changed.  I can't think of anything else that might be indicated by the light.

Thank you for any insight here!  I really need my car for work, but I am afraid to drive far until I know what this means.
